Bankroll management that survives an NFL season
Published · 7 min read
The fastest way to lose with a winning model is to bet too big. Bankroll management is the boring skill that keeps you in the game long enough for your edge to matter.
Define your unit first
A unit is your standard bet size, and it should be a small, fixed slice of your total bankroll — commonly 1–2%. If your bankroll is $1,000, a 1% unit is $10. This isn't timidity; it's survival math. Even a strong 55% model will have stretches where it loses six of eight. Small units mean those stretches sting instead of end you.
Flat betting: the default that works
Flat betting means every play is the same size (1 unit), or a simple two-tier version — 1 unit on Strong plays, 0.5 on Leans. It's unglamorous and it's what most disciplined winning bettors actually do. Flat betting removes emotion, prevents tilt-chasing, and lets your win rate express itself cleanly.
The Kelly criterion (and why to shade it down)
The Kelly criterion sizes each bet in proportion to your edge — bigger edges, bigger bets. Mathematically it maximizes long-run growth. In practice, full Kelly is brutally volatile and assumes you know your true edge precisely (you don't). Most sharp bettors use quarter- or half-Kelly to capture most of the growth with a fraction of the swings. If you're not comfortable estimating edges, flat betting is the safer default.
Full Kelly is a Ferrari with no brakes. Fractional Kelly — or flat betting — is how you actually finish the season.
Survive the losing streak
A 55% bettor will, at some point, lose five or six in a row. It's not the model breaking — it's math. Plan for it:
- Never increase unit size to "win it back." Chasing is how good models produce broke bettors.
- Set your bankroll aside. Money you've mentally spent is money you'll bet scared.
- Re-size units by percentage, not by feel. If your bankroll grows or shrinks 25%, recalculate your unit — don't eyeball it.
A simple season-long plan
- Pick a bankroll you can genuinely afford to lose.
- Set 1 unit = 1% of it.
- Bet Strong plays at 1u, Leans at 0.5u. Straight bets only.
- Recalculate your unit monthly.
- Track every bet, including the losers.
Do this and a real edge has room to work. Skip it and even the best picks in the world won't save you.
